Another school year has arrived
Another school year has arrived and I am anticipating another fantastic, fun filled year at the Meeting House Preschool. The first day of preschool is exhilarating as well as frightening for both children and families, even teachers. We begin the year with “Getting to Know You” theme; this helps everyone feel comfortable with each other. In the following weeks, we will have a discussion with the children about their favorite color, food, and animal. We graph their likes and dislikes, compare the answers.
One of my favorite songs that always pops into my head this time of year is “Getting to Know You” from The King and I. Here are the words …
It's a very ancient saying But a true and honest thought That if you become a teacher By your pupils you'll be taught As a teacher I've been learning You'll forgive me if I boast And I've now become an expert On the subject I like most Getting to know you Getting to know you Getting to know all about you Getting to like you Getting to hope you like me Getting to know you Putting it my way But nicely You are precisely My cup of tea Getting to know you Getting to know all about you Getting to like you Getting to hope you like me Getting to know you Putting it my way
But nicely You are precisely My cup of tea Getting to know you Getting to feel free and easy When I am with you Getting to know what to say Haven't you noticed Suddenly I'm bright and breezy? Because of all the beautiful and new Things I'm learning about you Day by day Getting to know you Getting to feel free and easy When I am with you Getting to know what to say Haven't you noticed Suddenly I'm bright and breezy? Because of all the beautiful and new Things I'm learning about you Day by day
Songwriters: Oscar Hammerstein II / Richard Rodgers (sung beautifully by Julie Andrews)
I feel anyone can relate to this song because each day we meet new people on our journey. So each September I start a new journey with the new preschoolers and their families. Day by day, we get to know each other and appreciate each other’s talents.
The curriculum for October will be to explore Community Friends and Fire Safety, and we will enjoy a visit from the Orleans Fire Department. We will discover shadows, animals that are nocturnal and diurnal, the five senses, and spiders vs. crabs (are they related?). The children will continue to grow and develop their self-help skills. They are busy forming positive friendships with their peers and are adjusting to the preschool routine.
Every month, we will present learning topics (theme) for the children. Each lesson has been carefully crafted to contain the Massachusetts Early Childhood Standards. Curriculum will contain an English language component, science, geography, mathematics, music and health. As a teacher, I love watching the children dive into a topic and really become involved in learning. It is truly captivating to watch the preschoolers grow.
We appreciate the support of the parishioners of The Federated Church of Orleans.
