Easter – The Resurrection – Pentecost – The Holy Spirit
The lectionary readings for Easter and Pentecost say it loudly and clearly:
“You know the message sent to the people, preaching peace by Jesus Christ…We are witnesses to all that Jesus did…He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify.” (from Acts 10)
“This is my message for you…go and tell my brothers and sisters…” (from Matthew 28)
“Mary Magdalene announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’.” (from John 20)
“I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughters shall prophecy; your young shall see visions, and your old shall dream dreams.” (from Acts 2)
“This Jesus God has raised up and we are all witnesses” (from Acts 2)
In other words, God commissions us to proclaim loudly and clearly and publicly the good news of all that the Resurrection stands for and the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives and to change the world.
Here at the Federated Church we have seen powerful witnesses to the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit – new life, new community, new hope of reconciliation between all peoples; new extravagant welcome -- in recent years. Here is just a sampling:
Becoming an Open and Affirming Church (by unanimous vote) in January 2012.
Welcoming our Jewish brothers and sisters from Am HaYam Cape Cod Havurah to our build-ing where they now hold their Shabbat services.
Our Justice Committee becoming an interfaith group with members of both the Federated Church and Am HaYam working to create justice together.
The installation of Solar Panels.
Our becoming designated a “Green Congregation” by the UCC in June 2017.
Our church building as the location where the Refugee Support Team and the Cape Cod Co-alition for Safe Communities meet.
Our church building as the location where the MLK Action Team hold its regular luncheons with area Police Chiefs.
Vibrant worship and engaged study.
Our generosity to Local Mission.
Our Free Community Easter Dinners!
The list could go on and on and on. Please fill in…..! And of course, all of you are the part of this extraordinary ministry. We are all commissioned to share this good news loudly and clearly and publically. Every time I drive by the church on Main Street, my heart is lifted with joy as I see the Rainbow banner and the banner which Betsy Wagner and Banner Committee created. In what ad-ditional ways can we proclaim the good news of how we are a Resurrection church? Please share your thoughts!
