Refugee Resettlement Update per Trump Ban

TO ALL CONCERNED ABOUT RECENT ACTION

AGAINST REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT

FROM: Justice Committee, Federated Church of Orleans, and Am HaYam Havurah, Refugee Support Team of Nauset Interfaith Association, Justice and Peace Committee of Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans, Nauset Interfaith Association Steering Committee

As citizens and members of faith communities, we are appalled and disappointed by President Trump's recent executive orders reducing refugee admissions and denying it completely to many of the world’s most suffering peoples. Together, our Cape Cod congregations have actively supported newly arrived families in the Worcester area through Ascentria Care Alliance, Worcester Interfaith and community circle congregations. We have educated and advocated for generous refugee policies. We are aware of the many benefits that refugees and immigrants bring to their new communities, despite a great deal of misinformation to the contrary.

We are guided by our scriptures’ command to love the strangers in our midst.

We believe this is a critical moment for people of faith and all Americans to make their voices heard.

It is very likely that you have received appeals to do this, and possibly have responded; however, we felt it would be valuable to reach out to all in our congregations with the basic information you will see below, and urge all members who have not done so to speak out on behalf of the refugee programs we support.

In the days to come there will undoubtedly be many other challenges, and invitations for us to put our faith into action. We will seek to stay informed and connected and bring further communications to our congregations.

Meanwhile, please take some moments on behalf of refugees and make the contacts below. If you don’t have time to do all, do what you can. Thank you!

CONTACT REPRESENTATIVE WILLIAM KEATING, SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN AND SENATOR EDWARD MARKEY

Option 1: Call (202) 224-3132 each time and ask to be connected with our representative or senator(s).

Sample script: “I am your constituent from ( ), and I strongly favor refugee resettlement in the U.S. I am deeply opposed to the executive orders from President Trump that would reduce refugee admissions, bring resettlement to a halt, stop resettling refugees from certain countries, and give preference to certain religions over others ( which is constitutionally objectionable and would deny our equality as God’s children) I speak as a member of a faith community involved in the support of new refugees, and believe it is immoral as well as un-American to deny refuge to the most desperate of earth’s men, women and children. The US currently accepts a comparatively small number of refugees while having a much lower population density than most other western hemisphere nations. Please urge President Trump to abandon this plan and do everything in your power to oppose and reverse these orders.”

Option 2: Email our legislators plus Senate Majority Leader and Speaker of the House. Go to:
