Global Village - Building in the Dominican Republic

(Global Village is a program of Habitat for Humanity International to build houses overseas. In early 2017, HHCC will be bringing a team of 17 volunteers to travel to Dominican Republic for nine days of building homes, working alongside present and future homeowners, learning more about Dominican Republic, and seeing the country.)

Dear Family and Friends of The Federated Church of Orleans,

I have joined a group from Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod who will be going to the Dominican Republic (DR) in late February to build a home for a deserving family.

Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization that promotes the right to adequate housing for everyone. Its work started in 1986, and has served more that 2500 Dominican families with decent and safe housing. It also supports low-income families so they can become agents of their own changes and communities. In the DR, the housing deficit exceeds 1,200,000 housing units, of which about 60% is qualitative (UNDP 2010). This means that the number of inadequate housing is greater than the number of families without homes. This figure grows annually by an average of 50,000 to 60,000 homes.

The cost of this building experience is $1,870 per person, a third of which goes to the Dominican affiliate to buy supplies, while the rest covers the costs of food, housing, in-country transportation and other expenses for the duration. I pay for my own flights. While I plan to cover the costs myself, I thought you might like to contribute to this important venture. Every bit of money collected will go to the Dominican build. All donations will be collected between now and January 5, allowing for holiday gifts to be included. Should you decide to contribute, send a check made payable to Habitat of Cape Cod, Attn: Dawn Walnut, 411 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675 or to use their website. Here you can use a credit card, but be aware that 7.5% of your contribution will cover fees via this means. Either way, in return for your contribution you will receive an acknowledgement that may be used for tax purposes.

Whether emotional or monetary, our group appreciates your support. I will look forward to sharing my experience upon return in the spring.
